The 15-Minute Etsy SEO Checklist (2026 Edition)
July 9, 2026
Etsy SEO isn't a dark art — it's a short list of things done consistently on every listing. Here's the whole list, in the order to do them. Fifteen minutes per listing, less once it's habit.
Title (3 minutes)
- The first 3–6 words are the exact phrase a buyer would search
- 85–120 characters used — not 40, not a stuffed 140
- Reads like a sentence fragment a human would say, not
Word | Word | Word - No ALL CAPS, no emoji, no "Free Shipping!!" opener
- Ends with an occasion or recipient if it fits ("Housewarming Gift")
Details and examples: how to write an Etsy title that ranks.
Tags (4 minutes)
- All 13 used — an empty slot is a search you can't win
- Every tag is a 2–3 word phrase, not a single word
- Each tag is 20 characters or fewer (Etsy truncates the field, not the rule)
- Tags don't repeat the title's words — they extend coverage
- Mix: descriptive (material/style) + occasion/recipient + aesthetic
- At least one gift-intent tag ("gift for her", "housewarming gift")

Description (4 minutes)
- First 160 characters work standalone as a Google snippet
- Concrete facts bulleted: size, materials, quantity, processing time
- Features translated to benefits ("soy wax → burns slower and cleaner")
- No invented specifics, no fake urgency, no "elevate your space" filler
- One-line close inviting questions

Photos & alt text (3 minutes)
- 6+ photos: main, detail, scale, in-use, packaging
- Alt text on every photo — one sentence describing what's visible
- Main photo readable as a thumbnail (the buyer sees it at 250px first)
Why alt text matters more than sellers think: the Etsy alt text guide.
Attributes & housekeeping (1 minute)
- Category chosen as deep as Etsy allows (not just "Candles" — the subcategory)
- Every attribute filled (color, occasion, holiday) — attributes act as free extra tags
- Shipping profile set; items with clear shipping info convert better
- Renew-worthy? If a listing has zero views after a month, revisit title + tags rather than just renewing
The mistakes that silently kill visibility
- Twelve tags. The most common miss on otherwise good listings.
- Title and tags saying the same thing. You've spent 26 slots on 13 phrases.
- Copy-pasted descriptions across listings. Etsy and Google both prefer unique text per item.
- Guessing keywords instead of checking. Type your product into Etsy's search bar and harvest the autocomplete — that's real buyer language, free.
- Set-and-forget. SEO is per-listing and iterative. Change one thing (title front-load, weak tags) and give it 2–3 weeks before judging.
