Etsy Alt Text: The SEO Boost Most Sellers Skip

July 9, 2026

Etsy gives every listing photo an alt text field. Most sellers leave every one of them blank. That's free visibility left on the table — alt text feeds Google Images, helps your listing get found outside Etsy search, and makes your shop usable for shoppers with screen readers.

What alt text actually is

Alt text is a short written description of what's literally in the photo. Screen readers speak it aloud for blind and low-vision shoppers; search engines read it to understand the image. On Etsy you'll find the field when you click a photo thumbnail while editing a listing.

Etsy allows up to 250 characters per image. You don't need anywhere near that — one clear sentence usually does it.

The formula

What's visible + one honest keyword + context if useful.

  • Weak: "candle" — tells Google and screen readers almost nothing.
  • Weak in the other direction: "soy candle handmade candle scented candle gift for her housewarming" — keyword stuffing. Screen readers read this aloud; imagine hearing it.
  • Strong: "Hand-poured soy candle in an amber glass jar with a cotton wick, shown lit on a wooden shelf."

Examples across photo types

  • Main photo: "Dainty gold name necklace spelling 'Emma' in cursive, on a white marble surface."
  • Detail shot: "Close-up of the 18k gold-filled chain and spring clasp."
  • Scale shot: "Woman wearing the personalized name necklace, showing pendant size at collarbone."
  • Packaging shot: "Necklace in a kraft gift box with a thank-you card, ready for gifting."

Notice each one describes what's actually visible — no invented claims, no phrase lists.

Three rules

  1. Describe the image, not the listing. The description field sells; alt text describes. If the photo shows the back of the mug, say so.
  2. One keyword, worked in naturally. "Soy candle" fits fine in a sentence about a candle photo. Five keywords don't.
  3. Every photo gets its own alt text. Ten photos with identical alt text is nearly as unhelpful as ten blanks.

Does it really move the needle?

Alt text alone won't outrank a bad listing. But Google Images is a real discovery channel for visual products — home decor, jewelry, art, wedding items especially — and listings with descriptive alt text are eligible for that traffic while blank ones aren't. It costs you one sentence per photo. The accessibility benefit is immediate either way.
